The Sheffield University LGBT Committee

Most cities have a thriving gay community and Sheffield is no different. There are a number of gay pubs and clubs as well as an annual Pride festival which really is becoming the pride of the city, now attracting more than 10,000 visitors after just four annual events. There is also a highly active and dedicated LGBT team at Sheffield University and a network of support and help for men and women of all ages. If you’re a student new to university then the challenges that await you can be difficult enough without having to worry about whether you will be accepted or not.

Fortunately, the Sheffield University LGBT committee, backed by the university itself, provides a strong network of support. You can find support and guidance on any issues you face including bullying or the stresses of coming out to friends and family. Alternatively, you can use the LGBT lounge in the Student Union for somewhere comfy and friendly to relax or you can enjoy any of the non-alcoholic meets, bar crawls, and social get-togethers. There’s always the gay nights in the Student Union where you can meet new people and have a great, relaxed night out.

The Sheffield gay scene is unusual, in so far as there is no single area where you will find the majority of gay bars. You can find them in the city centre itself as well as the various outskirts and regions. This means that you have a lot options when it comes to finding the perfect place for a drink but it also means that you have to be prepared to travel to experience everything that the Sheffield gay scene has to offer.

There are many events arranged by the LGBT committee and all gay and lesbian students are welcomed and encouraged to join. Coffee Revolution is a regular haunt for those that don’t want to consume alcohol or want a more relaxed way to meet of an afternoon while the Student Union itself is home to some of the biggest nights in the city.

There are two LGBT dedicated nights run in the Student Union every month; Climax and Revolution. Drinks are often arranged before the big night and you can find a variety of themes and types of entertainment so that you can meet up with friends and have a wild night thanks to the LGBT committee and Sheffield University.
